Participation of the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan  in the UN Security Council open debate

On 16 February 2022 the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations Jonibek Hikmat addressed the UN Security Council open debate on “Cooperation between the UN and the Regional and Sub-Regional Organizations in Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Cooperation between the United Nations and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO)”.
 In his statement, Jonibek Hikmat expressed concern over the growing international terrorism, extremism, illicit drug trafficking and different forms of transnational organized crime, especially emanating from Afghanistan and highlighted the important role played by regional organizations, including the CSTO in strengthening the UN efforts in countering the contemporary challenges and threats.

The Permanent Representative also noted that potential security threats call for the necessity to bring cooperation between the UN and the CSTO to a qualitatively new level. In this context, the development of mechanisms for cooperation between the CSTO and the UN in countering drug trafficking was considered important.

Taking into account the need to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border, the Permanent Representative referred to the proposal of the  Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, to create a "security belt" around Afghanistan, and called for the implementation of this initiative by the UN and other international organizations.
