The Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran established diplomatic relations on January 9, 1992.
Since April 2016 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Iran is Mr. Nizomiddin Zohidi.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Tajikistan is Mr. Mohammad Taghi Saberi since March 2019.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Dushanbe was opened on January, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan started functioning in Tehran in 1995.
Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries the President of the Republic of Tajikistan has paid official and working visits to the Islamic Republic of Iran (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013) and the President of Iran paid official and working visits to the Republic of Tajikistan (1997, 2000, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019).
Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran to Dushanbe took place on April 16, 2018 and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan paid an official visit to Tehran on 1-2 June 2019.
More than 160 agreements, MOU’s and other documents creating favorable conditions for the development of cooperation in the fields of political, economic, trade and investment, educational, cultural and etc. have been signed between the two countries.
Three rounds of consular consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and Iran were held in Dushanbe and Tehran.
The Tajik-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Technical and Cultural Cooperation plays an important role in the trade and economic field. Over the years, 12 meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission were held in Dushanbe and Tehran.
In 2018, the volume of trade amounted to $97.235 million. The amount of export is $35.14 million and import is $62.089 million.
Cooperation of the two countries has the historical roots. Tajikistan and Iran share the same culture and language and have the historical and heritage connections.
