Relations between Tajikistan and Iran

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were established on January 9, 1992. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran started operating in Dushanbe on January 9, 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan was opened in Tehran on July 18, 1995.

At present, Mr. Nizomiddin Zohidi (April of 2019) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Islamic Republic of Iran and Mr. Alireza Haqiqian (August of 2023) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Tajikistan.

During the 33 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan visited the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2022, 2024 and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran visited the Republic of Iran visited Tajikistan in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025.

Parliamentary cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran continues to expand throughout the course of bilateral relations. It is worth noting that on January 8-9, 2024, the official visit of the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mayor of Dushanbe, honorable Rustam Emomali, to the Islamic Republic of Iran took place. Within the framework of the visit, new documents on cooperation in the interparliamentary, scientific, economic, and intercity spheres were signed.

Also, the Chairman of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, visited Tajikistan on a working visit to participate in the International Interparliamentary Conference entitled “30th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan”, which was held on October 10-11, 2024.

It is worth noting that on February 17-19, 2025, the visit of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, honorable Kohir Rasulzoda, to the Islamic Republic of Iran in order to participate in the Third Caspian Economic Conference took place. During this visit, the Prime Minister held an official meeting with the First Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran to Dushanbe took place in 1991, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2013, 2017, 2018 and the visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan to Tehran were held in 1992, 1994, 2008, 2014, 2019, 2021, 2024.

On May 5-8, 2024, the second round of Political Consultations of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran was held in Dushanbe under the leadership of the Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. At the meeting, views were exchanged regarding the current state and prospects of bilateral relations in the political, economic, commercial, health, tourism, cultural and educational spheres and cooperation between the two countries was discussed within the framework of regional and international organizations.

To date, six rounds of consular consultations between the ministries of foreign affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran have been held in Dushanbe and Tehran with the last meeting being held on May 5, 2024 in Tehran.

Regarding the economic cooperation between the two countries, the Intergovernmental Commission of Tajikistan and Iran on commercial, economic, technical and cultural cooperation plays an important role, and so far, 16 meetings of the Commission have been held in Dushanbe and Tehran.

In 2024, the foreign trade turnover of Tajikistan with Iran reached 377,7 million US dollars. Of this amount, about 114,5 million dollars are exports and 263,2 million dollars are imports.

More than 200 agreements and memorandums of understanding and other documents of cooperation have been signed between the two countries.

Tajikistan and Iran are two countries that speak the same language and culture and have common historical and heritage ties.

Cultural and educational relations are considered an important factor in strengthening bilateral cooperation. In this regard, Cultural Days of the Republic of Tajikistan were held in the cities of Tehran, Shiraz and Tabriz of the Islamic Republic of Iran on October 3-9, 2022. Also, from October 30 to November 6, 2022, the Cultural Days of the Islamic Republic of Iran took place in the cities of Dushanbe, Khujand and Bokhtar of the Republic of Tajikistan.
