Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China were established on January 4, 1992. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Dushanbe was opened on March 13, 1992, and the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Beijing on April 7, 1997.
At present, Mr. Saidzoda Zohir Ozod (31.08.2020) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the People's Republic of China, and Mr. Ji Shumin (15.06.2022) is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Tajikistan.
January 4, 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and China.
Tajikistan and China are comprehensive strategic partners. Strengthening and development of friendly bilateral relations and cooperation with this country is one of the priority directions of Tajikistan's foreign policy.
In the history of bilateral relations, the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, made official, state and working visits (in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2003, 2007, 2012, 2012, 2013, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023) to the People's Republic of China.
The leaders of the People's Republic of China have also paid official, state and business visits to the Republic of Tajikistan (in 2000, 2008, 2014, 2019 and 2024).
During these visits, important political, economic, social and cultural documents were signed.
The first official visit of the President of Tajikistan to the People's Republic of China took place in March 1993, where the foundations of bilateral cooperation were laid, and during the official visit of the Head of State of Tajikistan in August 2017, the level of bilateral cooperation cooperation was raised to the level of comprehensive strategic partnership.
On 4-6 July 2024, President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China had a state visit to the Republic of Tajikistan. The Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon welcomed the distinguished guest, His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, with great respect and warmth and sincerity.
Discussions on further development and expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and China began at the special meeting of the Heads of State and continued at meetings with large delegations from both sides. The sides expressed satisfaction with the steady growth of trade between the countries, which continues at a high pace.
On 23-25 September 2024, Chen Wenqing, member of the Political Bureau, Secretary of the Political and Legal Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, paid a visit to the Republic of Tajikistan.
In August 2023, a new member of the Friendship and Cooperation Group was established between the parliaments of the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China.
On August 20-23, 2023, Mr. Rustami Emomali, Chairman of the Majlisi Milli Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, paid an official visit to China. The results of this historic visit are considered important in the process of development and expansion of inter-parliamentary relations between Tajikistan and China, enrichment of bilateral relations and further strengthening of friendly relations and comprehensive strategic partnership between Tajikistan and China.
On November 1-2, 2023, a Chinese delegation led by Mr. Ma Xingzhui, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, visited our country.
On November 2, 2023 the President of the Republic of Tajikistan His Excellency Emomali Rahmon received Mr. Ma Xinzhui, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.
During the talks, a wide range of issues of friendly relations, good-neighborliness and cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China within the framework of comprehensive strategic partnership were discussed.
During this period, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan S. Muhriddin has repeatedly made official visits (July 22-25, 2015, April 23, 2018, April 23-27, 2023, November 30 – 1 December, 2024) to China.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Wang Yi made an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan on May 20-21, 2019 and April 23-27, 2023, May 18-19, 2024.
A mechanism for political consultations has been established between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
More than 250 bilateral documents make up the treaty and legal framework of the two countries.
The Joint Statement on Basic Principles of Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China of March 9, 1993, the Agreement on Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China of January 15, 2007, the Joint Statement of the Heads of State of the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership Relations of May 20, 2013, and the Joint Statement of the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China on Further Strengthening Strategic Partnership of the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China of May 20, 2013.
On August 31, 2017, the Republic of Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China signed a joint declaration on the establishment of comprehensive strategic partnership, which created a solid foundation for the development of bilateral cooperation.
Trade and economic cooperation
The People's Republic of China is the largest investor in the economy of Tajikistan and the main trade partner of the country.
The basis for the development of trade and economic ties between the two countries is good-neighborly friendly relations, as well as the rich potential of natural resources.
Indicators of trade turnover for 33 years on the way of comprehensive strategic partnership testify to its high growth rates. If in 1993 trade turnover between Tajikistan and China was equal to 8.9 million dollars, in 2024 the turnover of mutual trade amounted to 1 billion 955 million dollars.
For 9 months of 2024, in the ranking of the structure of foreign trade flow of the Republic of Tajikistan, China takes the 2nd place. China's share in Tajikistan's foreign trade turnover is 21.2 percent.
In order to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, an Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation has been established. Also, in order to ensure fruitful interdisciplinary cooperation, the Tajikistan-SUAR Intergovernmental Sub-Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation has been established under this Commission.
On November 2, 2023, the 6th meeting of the Sub-Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation between Tajikistan and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China and the Forum of Entrepreneurs of Tajikistan and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the PRC were held.
On May 8, 2024, the 13th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission of Tajikistan and China on Trade and Economic Cooperation was held in Beijing.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation
Cultural cooperation between Tajikistan and China is conducted in general on the basis of the "Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the People's Republic of China on cooperation in the field of culture", as well as Cultural Exchange Programs between the Ministries of Culture of the two countries.
The Days of Culture of Tajikistan in 2008, 2013, 2019 were held in China, and the Days of Culture of China were held in the Republic of Tajikistan in 2007 and 2014.
