Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Turkiye

The Republic of Turkiye was among the first countries to recognize the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan on 16 December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two states were formally established on 29 January 1992.

In 1992, the Embassy of the Republic of Turkiye commenced its operations in Dushanbe. Subsequently, in 1995, the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan was inaugurated in Ankara.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the Republic of Turkiye, Mr. Sodiq Imomi, was appointed on 4 January 2025. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkiye to the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Umut Acar, was appointed on 1 February 2023.

Over the course of 34 years of diplomatic relations, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Tajikistan has conducted eight official and working visits to the Republic of Turkiye (May 1996, October 1998, November 1999, October 2002, June 2004, January 2006, March 2009, and December 2012).

During the same period, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Turkiye has undertaken four official and working visits to the Republic of Tajikistan (September 1995, November 2001, May 2009, and June 2019).

At the invitation of His Excellency Rustami Emomali, Chairman of the Majlisi Milli of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Numan Kurtulmuş, Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkiye, paid an official visit to Dushanbe from 1 to 3 December 2025.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan paid official and working visits to the Republic of Turkiye in April 2019, June 2021, February 2024, and June 2025. Likewise, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye paid official and working visits to the Republic of Tajikistan in October 2016, March 2021, and January 2024.

Regular political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye are held with a view to strengthening bilateral cooperation. To date, nine rounds of such consultations have been conducted.

Furthermore, consular consultations are also held on a regular basis between the Main Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Consular Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye.

During the first eleven months of 2025, the foreign trade turnover between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Turkiye amounted to approximately USD 376.6 million, including USD 198.4 million in exports and USD 178.2 million in imports. In terms of export volume, Turkiye ranks as the fifth-largest trading partner of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Tajikistan and Turkiye plays a key role in advancing bilateral economic cooperation. To date, twelve sessions of the Commission have been held in Dushanbe and Ankara.

From 2007 to 2024, the Republic of Turkiye invested over USD 285 million in various sectors of the Tajik economy, particularly in industry, services, and trade, including USD 151.6 million in foreign direct investment.

Cultural cooperation between the two countries is rooted in deep historical ties. Tajikistan and Turkiye share a common cultural heritage associated with prominent world thinkers, including Jalal al-Din Rumi. In this context, at the initiative of both sides, an International Scientific Symposium entitled “Rumi – Unite of Peoples and Civilizations” was held in Dushanbe on 19–20 October 2018 in honor of this eminent thinker.
