Relations of Tajikistan with Finland

Diplomatic relations with the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Finland were established on February 26, 1992.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Finland to the Republic of Tajikistan is Ilkka Raisanen with residence in Helsinki.

At the first stage of relations between Tajikistan and Finland, after the establishment of diplomatic relations, a number of high-level meetings and negotiations took place, including between the heads of foreign policy departments, during which the main directions of relations between the two countries were discussed.

During the visits of the Foreign Ministers of Finland to Tajikistan in 2006 and 2008, both sides considered the prospects for further cooperation and exchanged views on solutions for expanding relations.

The Foreign Ministers of Tajikistan and Finland regularly meet at international events.

An important phase in relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Finland commenced with the official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon to this country on 23-25 October 2012.

Interparliamentary relations between the two countries are steadily developing as a tool for bilateral cooperation. For this purpose, interparliamentary friendship and cooperation groups have been created between the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Eduskunta (parliament) of Finland

Since 2009, political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland have been regularly conducted.  These consultations have provided a solid foundation for discussing a broad range of bilateral and multilateral issues between the two counties. The most recent meeting was held virtually on 25 October 2023.

On February 26, 2022, the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon exchanged congratulatory telegrams with the President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinisto in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Cultural and education cooperation between Tajikistan and Finland continues to flourish.  In June 2017, the Serena Hotel in Dushanbe hosted a photo exhibition dedicated to the memory of General Eduard Karlovich Kivekes, a distinguished figure who once led the Pamir border troops, and resided in Khorog during the late19th century.

At the present stage, Finland is establishing effective cooperation with Tajikistan in the fields of the economy, education, geology and other priority areas. Therefore, necessary steps are being taken to strengthen cooperation through economic forums and various dialogues.

The Finnish Lung Health Association (Filha) has established effective cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan and its subordinate institutions.

The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Tajikistan with the Republic of Finland in 2024 amounted to 6,5 million USD.

The legal framework governing the relationship between the two countries comprises four documents.

The Parties shall also cooperate within the framework of international organizations.
