On July 14, 2022, at the UN Headquarters, within the framework of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, at the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in cooperation with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), UN-Water and other partners, organized a special event on the topic “Water and climate adaptation: two sides of the same coin”.
During the event, moderated by UN-Water Deputy Head Ms. Kelly-Anne Naylor, the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Ms. Silveria Jacobs Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Daler Juma (virtual), Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of the Netherlands, Ms. Lissier Schreinemacher, as well as specialists and heads of sectoral institutions spoke on related topics.
The session was devoted to the role of water resources in adapting to climate change, achieving sustainability, problems of people's access to clean water, climate change and its consequences, melting glaciers, environmental protection, and reducing the impact of various factors in the countries of the world.
Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan in his speech, informed about the contribution of the global initiatives of the Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Emomali Rahmon to the implementation of international goals and the global development agenda, the results of the Second Dushanbe Water Conference in promoting the work of the United Nations Water Conference in 2023, the importance of glaciers in protecting water resources and the significance of the next initiative of the Leader of the Nation to declare 2025 the International Year for the Protection of Glaciers in the process of effectively promoting water and climate issues, as well as the continuation of the activities of the leaders of the Water and Climate Coalition and other international sectoral instruments.
In this regard, the determination of themes of the UN Water Conference and developing a document of the Water Decade Agenda to specify the contribution and commitments of the UN Member States to the practical solution of water and climate issues at the global level were recognized as important in the session.
