Tajikistan-United States relations

Оn February 14, 1992, the two countries officially established the diplomatic relations. The Embassy of the United States with its residence in Kazakhstan was opened in March 1992. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA is Mr.John Mark Pommersheim(presented credentials on 15 March 2019). The Republic of Tajikistan opened its Embassy in Washington in 2002. Mr. Farrukh Hamralizoda is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to the USA.

The official visit of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to America in 2002, as well as the meeting with the American President George Bush played a great role in strengthening bilateral political relations. During the visit, issues of political and economic reforms in Tajikistan, cooperation in the field of combating international terrorism and illegal drug trafficking were discussed.

Visits of US Secretaries of State, James Baker, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry to Tajikistan also contributed to further development of bilateral relations.

The Republic of Tajikistan and the United States on a regular basis hold annual bilateral consultations, which serve as an important mechanism for strengthening and further development of relations.

To date, the parties have signed more than 34 bilateral documents in the spheres of economy and trade, military-technical cooperation, the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, 22 are intergovernmental agreements.

Economic cooperation covers areas that contribute to the implementation of the national development strategy of Tajikistan.

The United States implements a number of educational exchange programs in Tajikistan, such as "Edmund S. Muskie Internship Program", "Fulbright", "FLEX", Cochran Fellowship Program, Business Internship Training Program "SABIT", etc.

On May 8, 1987, the Sister cities Agreement between the cities of Dushanbe and Boulder was signed. In 1997 as a gift from Dushanbe began the construction of a teahouse in Boulder, a year later took place the official opening of the Teahouse. Boulder, for its part, presented to Dushanbe an Internet cafe “Center of friendship".

The Republic of Tajikistan and the United States collaborate in the C5+1 Format (the five Central Asian states and the United States).

The Republic of Tajikistan and the United States intensify trade cooperation within the Framework agreement on trade and investment between the governments of the United States and Central Asian states (TIFA), signed in Washington on June 1, 2004.
