Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Italian Republic were established on May 15th 1992.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan is Mr. Andrea Bertozzi (with residence in Tashkent, credentials presented on 22 November 2016).

Political cooperation (exchange of the visits). On May 21-22, 2007 visit of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic senator Gianni Vernetti to Tajikistan has taken place. During the visit G.Vernetti has met with the President of the Republic Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Director of the Drug Control Agency General R.Nazarov and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs A.Yuldoshev.
On 2 April, 2009 the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Senator Alfredo Mantika visited Tajikistan. During this visit he met with the Prime-Minister A. Akilov, Chairman of Majlisi Namoyandagon S.Khairulloev and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.Zarifi. During his visit the Agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Government of Italy on economic, industrial and technical cooperation and the Protocol on cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy have been signed.
On 12-13 September 2010 Italian delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Italy A.Urso visited Tajikistan. The delegation conducted meetings with representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Energy and Industry, Ministry of Transport and Communication, Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Tajik entrepreneurs.
On 1 July 2016, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the head of the Italian company “Salini Impregilo S.p.A.” Pietro Salini, which eventually took on construction of Rogun HPP in Tajikistan. A cooperation agreement was signed between Tajikistan and the Italian company for the design, purchase of equipment and construction of the Rogun HPP. The Italian company will be allocated $ 3.9 billion by the Tajik side for the Rogun HPP project implementation.
Economic cooperation. In 2003 the "Italian Trade Organization" opened its representative office in the Republic of Tajikistan, and started its activity in delivering the equipment and spare parts for cars and trucks.
Joint Tajik-Italian Company “Javoni” operates in Tajikistan and is specialized mainly in the production of finished products from denim, corduroy and light clothing fabrics.
On July 20, 2015 the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Tajikistan Sharif Said received the Italian economic delegation of NGO UMBRIA EXPORT (Italy) headed by the Project Manager of the European Union for the development of crafts Enzo Falochchi.
The Italian delegation arrived in Dushanbe from Umbria (largest region in Italy) at the invitation of Sharif Said, following his visit to Umbria in December 2014 with the aim of establishing business contacts with the business community in Tajikistan, and to look for potential partners and customers, and work on the Tajik market.
The purpose of the visit was the establishment of business relations between the business circles of Italy and Tajikistan, company presentations, exchange of experiences and discussion of the key features associated with the establishment of the development partnership of business cooperation.
During a productive conversation focused on bilateral economic and trade cooperation and strengthening of these relations in the future.
The turnover between the Republic of Tajikistan and Italian Republic:
In 9 months of 2017 (January-September) – total amount of trade turnover has reached 19980,2 thousand USD (export – 11531,8 thousand USD, import – 8448,4 thousand USD).
Cooperation in the field of security. Over the past years, the strategic partnership between our countries is developing actively in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. The Italian Republic was one of the major donors in the creation of the Agency for Drug Control under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (DCA). Throughout this cooperation were held several meetings between the leadership of DCA and leadership of the Italian police. In the framework of this cooperation special trainings for employees and special purpose units of the analytical center in Italy were organized.
