Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Italian Republic were established on May 15, 1992.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Italy is Jamoliddin Ubaidullo (with residence in Paris, date of presentation of credentials March 8, 2019).

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic to Tajikistan is Piergabriela Papadia de Bottini (with residence in Tashkent, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan on 31 January 2025).

Development of cooperation with Italy is one of the priority directions of the foreign policy of the Republic of Tajikistan. The foundations for strengthening friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation have been laid through the exchange of bilateral visits at the highest level.

Since 2007, mutual visits by representatives of the foreign ministries of both countries have significantly expanded, during which prospects for deepening mutually beneficial cooperation were discussed.

In 2024, the first official visit of the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Honourable Emomali Rahmon to the Republic of Italy and the State of Vatican City took place. The co-operation documents were signed during the political negotiations and are considered important for further expansion of co-operation between the two countries in such areas as security, industry, environmental protection, combating drug trafficking, cultural and scientific exchange and tourism.

The mechanism of political consultations, the first round of which was held in Dushanbe in 2018, the second round in Rome in 2020 and the third round in 2021(in the format of videoconference) has played a key role in expanding co-operation between the two countries.

To date, 14 intergovernmental and interagency agreements have been signed between the two states, which create a solid foundation for strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation.

In recent years, there has been a positive dynamic in the development of economic relations between Tajikistan and Italy. The presence of Italian companies is noticeable in such sectors as hydropower (e.g. Vibild company at Rogun HPP), textile industry (production companies ‘Javani’ and ‘Kariera’), as well as in other sectors of the economy. In addition, within the framework of the official visit of the Head of State to Rome, along with meetings at the highest level, the summit ‘Presentation of the Republic of Tajikistan in Italy’ (Tajik-Italian investment forum) was held, where new directions of trade and economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Italy were discussed.

The volume of trade turnover between the two countries is increasing every year.

In addition to the existing cooperation mechanisms, the Republic of Tajikistan is also actively cooperating with Italy within the C5+1 format (Central Asia + Italy). The Central Asia-Italy format was established in 2019 and meetings within its framework are held regularly. At the last meeting, held on 29 May 2024, the prospects for cooperation between Central Asian countries and Italy in political, economic, trade, water-energy, environmental, transport, tourism and educational spheres, as well as topical issues of regional and international cooperation, risks and challenges of the present, including the situation in Afghanistan and Central Asia, were discussed.
