Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Norway were established in 1992. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to the Republic of Tajikistan (with residence in Astana) is Ole Johan Bjørnøy.
Political cooperation (exchange of the visits). Until today, the diplomatic relations between the two states are limited only by the diplomatic correspondence and the legal base of the countries has not yet been fully established.
Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs twice visited Tajikistan. The first visit took place in 1999, when Norway was chairing the OSCE, and the second visit was carried out in 2004. The Norwegian delegation of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly visited Tajikistan in 2012. In November 2012 Minister of Energy and Industry of Tajikistan visited Norway.
In the period of early independence of Tajikistan the Norwegian Government has provided humanitarian and technical assistance to the country. It should be noted that the Kingdom of Norway in the framework of the OSCE program for the destruction of small arms and light conventional ammunition provided the assistance to Tajikistan.
On August 6, 2010 was signed the "Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the “Organization of Norwegian People's Aid” on humanitarian cooperation in the field of mine clearance." In accordance with the agreement in 2010, the Norwegian side allocated 7 million. kroons (1.06 mln. $) for the cleaning minefields in Tajikistan.
On April 20, 2015 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Nizomiddin Zohidi has met with the delegation of the Kingdom of Norway headed by Ambassador of Norway to Tajikistan (with the residence in Astana) Ole Johan Bjørnøy.
During the meeting the level of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Norway, as well as the realization of the projects financed by Norway in Tajikistan have been discussed. The parties noted a solid potential for the further development of bilateral cooperation, especially in the field of hydro energy.
Economic cooperation. The foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Tajikistan with the Kingdom of Norway in 6 month 2014 amounted to 21.3 thousand U.S. (In 6 month 2014 – 149.8).
Tajik-Norwegian joint enterprise "Tajgidro" was created on the basis of a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway and the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan signed on April 27, 2010.
"Tajgidro" program is a member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development - ALS Support business consultations. This program also includes projects on energy efficiency and energy audit.
"Tajgidro" also works closely with the International Finance Corporation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway to attract investments in the small hydropower sector in Tajikistan.
Legal base of the bilateral cooperation has not yet been fully established.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade’s data the volume of trade between the Republic of Tajikistan and Great Britain in 2016 (January-September) total amount of bilateral trade reached 1155,8 thousand USD (import – 1155,8 thousand USD).
In 9 months of 2017 (January-September) – the total amount of bilateral trade reached 28,5 thousand US dollars (imports – 25,4 thousand USD, export – 3,1 thousand USD).
