Bilateral relations of Republic of Tajikistan with Portuguese Republic

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Portuguese Republic were established on August 4, 1992.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Portuguese Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan is Mrs. Maria Madalena Lobo Carvalho Fischer (with the residence is in Moscow). She presented her credentials on March 9, 2023.

The exchange of official visits between the two countries. On July 9, 2002 the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Antonio Martins da Cruz. During the talks the sides paid special attention to the situation in the region and especially in Afghanistan.

On April 16, 2009 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic Luis Amadou visited Tajikistan and met with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hamrokhon Zarifi. The Minister was accompanied by an official delegation consisting of the Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to the Republic of Tajikistan Manuel Marcelo Courtois and other heads of relevant departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic. The issues of bilateral relations, cooperation between the two countries in the framework of the EU Strategy for Central Asia, the situation in Afghanistan and other international issues have been discussed at the meeting.

On June 8, 2010 the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the Secretary of State of Portugal Joao Gomes Craviniu, who visited in Tajikistan to take part in the International High-Level Conference “Water for Life”. The issues related to global threats and challenges, including the shortage of clean water in many regions of the planet, the rational and efficient use of water and energy resources and bilateral relations between Tajikistan and Portugal have been considered at the meeting.

According to the Customs Service of the Republic of Tajikistan, the volume of bilateral trade between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Portuguese Republic on August 2023 amounted to 51 thousand US dollars, of which included only exports.
